OPPORTUNITIES. TEXT-AND-TALK Language Development Academy plans in the near future to open locations more central to the city, but at present is located just 40 meters off Phaholyothin Road inside Soi 32 ( Sena Nikhom 1) -- on the right-hand side. Our institute conducts training mostly in companies and homes, but has some inside teaching opportunities, especially of children on Saturdays and Sundays and of adults receiving special-purpose instruction one-on-one at other times. Our in-company and in-home instruction is second to none, owing to our personal knowledge of how successful training of Thai students must be conducted; our Placement Exam, developed to uncover the extent of "basics" problems which are especially "Thai"; the quality of our teachers, our stock of materials, our academic service system -- and our constant follow-up to ensure customer and student satisfaction. Currently, we need business English teachers (especially) from any and all locations of the city, in order to accommodate new training contracts, and to reduce travel times as much as possible for existing teachers.

WHO SHOULD APPLY.

1. Persons highly experienced in teaching English to Thai, as well as Japanese, business persons, and to families. Preference is given to teachers who have resided in Thailand for a number of years and plan to remain here. You should have a keen understanding of the Thai culture and ways, and of problems Thai people have in learning our language -- along with the means and techniques to help them overcome such problems. You should know at least survival Thai. A TEFL Certificate, TESL Certificate or RSA Certificate and/or a teaching certificate from your own country are pluses; they are not mandatory: because knowing how to teach Thai people successfully is the target, not people from other parts of the world. Academic attainment level is not unimportant, but will not be a decisive factor in determining whether you can work for us or not.

2. Persons with several years of successful English teaching in Japan and/or Taiwan who wish to live and remain in Thailand for at least another two years.

3. Professional persons, such as engineers, CPAs, business entrepreneurs with MBAs, etc., who have knowledge of the Thai culture, language and ways -- especially those with teaching experience in other fields who have resided in Thailand for a year or longer. We can (with your diligent cooperation) train you rapidly to teach business English successfully, as your life experience and ability to relate to the communication problems inherent in business situations will be of considerable value in the classroom.

4. Persons with experience as presenters of workshops or seminars, in any field. Again, you should have knowledge of Thailand and the Thai people, or -- at the least -- a knowledge of Taiwanese or Japanese people. Opening shortly will be TEXT-AND-TALK's Business Writing Workshop, which has been in the development and finalization stage for over a year, and promises to be highly successful owing to its patterning on other workshops conducted with excellent results around the world, and its accommodation to the needs of Thai staff in particular. Other workshops and seminars (many not in the language training sphere at all) will soon be opened. Especially needed will be English native-speaking women with secretarial or business administration experience, and successful English native-speaking business persons of all backgrounds. Remuneration for presenting at workshops or seminars (not for our regular language training courses, marketed at lower rates) will be @ 600-800 baht per hour.

HOURLY TEACHING RATE AND INCOME. When our institute started out seven years ago, we set the standard for the highest rates paid. Our rates are still excellent, and often higher than those paid by other schools: but are not the highest in every circumstance, as we find it is better to get a lot of courses to keep our teachers busy, than to get only a few (paid at high rates), and keep only some of our teachers busy. TEACHER NEEDS AND RIGHTS. WORK PERMITS. At the moment, the number of work permits which can be obtained by a Ministry of Education authorized language institute such as ours is limited to the number of teachers who could be teaching full-time on school premises. They are not issued at all to teachers who work mainly in companies or homes. If you are a reader of the Bangkok Post, and of The Postbag in particular, you already know that only our school, and only our school's Director, have put their names on the line to help secure legal work status (and long-term visas) for the worthy teachers helping Thais to compete in the world marketplace through expert English instruction. This fight continues, and we will not stop or be silent until we have won. (See our Announcements & Issues Web Page.) GROUP HEALTH INSURANCE. Shortly, health insurance will be available to everyone working for our organization. We cannot afford to pay the premium for you, but that is small because of the group rate. SECURITY. Your security consists of our policy of giving you all the work that you want, if you have done a good job for us already! BONUSES. We give you a bonus just for completing each full course of instruction (or penalize you an equal amount if you don't). We also give you a bonus (in the form of a higher hourly instruction rate) when a course is renewed and you are requested as the teacher. If you are not requested to be the teacher, we will still give you a small bonus in addition to your course-completion bonus as our way of acknowledging that "You must have done something right"! (We also accept that no one pleases everyone all the time. If we must remove you from a course because of some factor that we don't perceive as being "your fault", we will just give you a new course to replace it! If this happens more than once, however, we will be forced to probe deeply to see what's going wrong.)

WHAT WE EXPECT OF YOU. PROFESSIONAL APPEARANCE. This includes excellent cleanliness, grooming and hygiene (with evidence thereof!), and, for men, a dress shirt and tie. RESPONSIBLE BEHAVIOR. This includes not accepting any course unless you are certain you will be able to battle through the traffic and reach your destination on time, and that you can and will complete it. (In the beginning, however, you should not be too "picky", as, if you live in Nonthaburi, the next course available may be on Silom, or vice-versa. In practice, you will find that your teaching area shortly will shrink into an area not far from where you live -- but in the interim you will need to make money!) This requirement also includes preparing lessons well, arriving on time, keeping good accurate attendance and instruction records, and conducting progress exams and student evaluations every 20 hours of each course. And, finally, it includes not "demanding" a higher teaching rate than what we have offered, because if you are slightly inconvenienced once, we will move heaven and earth to make it up to you as soon as possible; but we will not be able to take very good care of you if you set teaching rate standards that our marketplace will not permit us to pay.

3. EXCELLENT EDITORS ARE NEEDED to edit documents either from their homes or at our office, to ensure that we have performed outstanding translation work for our clients. Qualifications are both 1 and 2 above.
